8 // Krafty Kuts

The hip hop obsessive turned foremost breakbeat DJ is one of the UKs national treasures. Mixing the bare essentials of hip hop – mixing funk and soul records on two turntables and a mixer – Martin Reeves does exactly what is expected of a DJ, but with so much more class, finesse and passion to boot. For his Data Transmission mix, he crammed an astounding 45 tracks into his mix, ranging from seamless blends between Wolfgang Gartner and RackNRuin to The Jungle Brothers, Wu Tang Clan, Adele accapellas and plenty of his own re-rubs. Krafty demonstrates the power of the break beat in its varying guises; more than a stale genre of music that takes influence from house and hip hop, Martin demonstrates breakbeat chaos and how to utilise the most important tool and the fundamental core of all mixing since the late seventies. All party DJs everywhere – take note! GF

9 // Med School

Med School is the sister imprint to one of drum and bass's biggest bodies, Hospital Records. While Hospital look after the bigger club and dance floor releases, Med School is their outlet for experimental, progressive and often plain weird music. The unrestrained creativity welcomed on the Med School label has provided a leg up many up and comers, four of which feature on this podcast. Lung opens things up with a contrasting range of genre styles for his 20 minute stint. Eleven8 shies away from the drum and bass tempo taking things into extremely broody territory. Finally Anile pulls the tempo back up delivering a snapshot of what was big in drum and bass at the time. JS

10 // Till von Sein

Till von Sein has spent the best part of his working life in music. From running a record shop to working as a booking agent at Clique Booking for the likes of Kollektiv Turmstrasse, the hip hop obsessive turned house music appreciator turned in one of the less generic house albums of the year, free from constraints and doused in musicality and deep emotional clarity. And much like his album, the mix doesn’t conform to stereotypes. Multi tempo, grooving and concerned with musical ability rather than the usual dancefloor focused mix, he runs from Carlos Nilmms and Jimpster’s bubbling remix of Terence Parker’sLove’s Got Me High’ to recent stars such as Eats Everything. If house music is a feeling, rather than a generic style, then Till has it trimmed down to a lean, mean, dancing machine. JG
