You’re sound is driving, feel good Xpress-2 but it
also sounds very now, with a focus on heavy hitting drums and bassy
weight...We never really think about it to be honest. With us it's all
about the vibe and how any one track is sounding on that day. We may have a big
tribal drag queen feel one day, then the next we might be listening to some Mr
Fingers records and go in that route with another track, then we might be in a
mellow, melancholy mood and go that way...
In terms of live or DJ sets, what have you been up
to? Are you still playing on vinyl when you play those marvellously dexterous
sets?
We very occasionally dust off the vinyl but pretty much these days
it's all CDs and USB sticks. We're of the opinion that no matter what format
you use, do the people dance?
Thinking back to when you released those monster
tunes such as Musik Express and The Sound, how has the house music scene
changed over time?
In the same way that it's always changed. Someone will come along
with a new sound or slightly different sound and the whole thing moves in
another direction. We love that aspect of house music, its constant flux and consistent
movement.
A career spanning 25 years, we’re going to ask the
impossible and ask you what are the standout memories or key moments of X-press
2? What defines and sums up those years of experience?
There have been 100s of moments to be honest. I thing receiving an
Ivor Novello song writing award for Lazy was pretty amazing! All we've ever
done is love what we do, making and playing house music to people around the
world.
Do you think electronic and dance music scenes are
suffering from people being too rigid with one style or sound? Is eclecticism
the key to keeping an album or DJ set spicy and interesting?
No not at all. That's the whole beauty of it. You can use lots of
different influences within what you do. That's what we loved when we first
started going out in the 80s, you would hear a myriad of different styles in
one night.
Finally what’s next for the rest of 2012; a plethora
of gigs or more studio work to come?More studio work is next. We've already made a start on the next
album. The plan is to get another 2 done this year. One straight up X-Press 2 album,
the second more in the style of The Ballistic Brothers tracks that we used to
make back in the day. And of course lot's of DJing. =)
