Zombies, breakbeats, synths, guitars, drums, left-of-centre US rappers; they all usually figure in a day-in-the-life of Brighton boys Evil Nine. From their groundbreaking reinterpretation of nu skool breaks in the early 2000s to their reincarnation as electro-heavy noisemakers, they’ve always screamed quality, and we’ve got many happy memories of seeing them rock FABRICLIVE years ago.
They’ve put together a rip-roaring podcast for us, featuring some of the downright naughtiest electro squiggles of recent months, plus a few anthemic belters. We love it when they get Crooked…
What's your personal favourite track on it?
That would be Pigeon Dance by Leopold Gregori. He's a new guy on the block but I reckon he's gonna do big things. This track is so fresh and interesting with a great melody and crazy noises which are always good.
What's the special ingredient in this mix?
Love.
What's the best gig you've played recently?
Played Tiblisi in Georgia the other month. It was insane. The georgians love us but we have never made it out there before and it was Halloween which made it even madder. Everyone was in fancy dress and one crew had made their own homemade blood splattered evil nine t shirts which we wore on our album launch. I felt quite moved by their attention to detail! It was one of those rare shows where everything was perfect - i was on a good tip with the mixing and the crowd, venue and sound system were outstanding...pretty EPIC! The food there is mighty tasty too!
What have you got coming up?
Well, we just done a remix for Alex Metric's new single It Starts which features on the mix and is out in most digital outlets now. There's a remix we made for Don Diablo - This Is Where I Belong - about to drop. We've also just collaborated with Spoek, a rapper from Joberg on a new single. It’s his homage to strippers and we reckon it’s pretty BIG. That should be out early next year. On the hip-hop side of things, we done a remix for B Dolan on Sage Francis' label and a possible Def Jux project in the future. We got a tour coming up in Australia for New Year's Day and then it’s the Summadayze extravaganza with Fake Blood, Proxy, Riton and so on - and to celebrate that we are releasing a mixtape on iTunes with all-new Marine Parade shit on it. All good goodness.
And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?
Look after yourselves this holiday season, get some sleep and eat some sprouts with your turkey.
