Kidkanveil’s one of those fine UK talents that hasn’t had the credit he deserves. We were first played one of his records in the back of someone’s car on a Sunday afternoon in London by a friend who knew him, and we were grabbed by his funky hip-hop flavours and humorous lyrics. His first album Problems & Solutions featured guest spots from excellent names like Yarah Bravo (of DJ Vadim fame), Jehst, Lateef and Sir Smurf Lil’, while the brilliantly-named follow-up Back Off Man, I’m A Scientist saw him rope in Bonobo for a collaboration, who it seems is a big fan.
Remixes for the likes of Alice Russell, Nautral Self and DJ Vadim followed, and his Stateless project was signed to !K7 a few years back (a wonderful band who create delicate, melancholy beauties). But now with his new album Basho Basho he’s turned attention to the murky depths of dubstep and gritty UK bass music, with a tinge of Oriental flavour (he lists his location on MySpace as ‘Tokyorkshire’) – and created a truly inspiring LP. Sort of like a more palatable King Cannibal.
This week’s Podcast sees him sift through his favourite dubstep and thereabouts flavours, with a mix of filthy bass and glitchy, phat beats and some old skool jungle to top it all off. A superb mix we think you’ll agree. Look out for him this February at London’s Red Bull Music Academy.
Sum up this podcast in 10 words...
Radioactive bassbin bananastep beats straight out my basement. Bullet bullet.
What’s your personal favourite track on it?
That’s a tough one, I’ma go with Party by mr Blue Daisy. He made it as a kinda throwaway track for his sister’s college project or summin, but it's proper badman grimey as hell! Ridiculous producer, everyone needs to watch out.
What’s the special ingredient in this mix?
I sprinkled a touch of jungle in at the end.
What’s the best gig you’ve played recently?
It wasn’t that recent as such but the best gig of last year for me was the last day at Soundwave festival in Croatia. Massive crowd going nuts to just about anything I felt liked dropping, beautiful surroundings, big soundsystem. Can’t complain! Was all love!
What have you got coming up?
Next up is my album launch party on the January 15th at Market Place in London. I’ve got Mr Thing, DJ IQ, Illum Sphere and Gilla DJing with me, and Orifice Vulgatron and Testament hosting. Should be dope! Then my album Basho Basho drops on the 18th, gonna follow that with some remixes from Tokimonsta and Blue Daisy. I’ve got Red Bull Music Academy end of Feb, cannot wait for that shit! Then the most immediate thing project-wise is a collaboration with Foreign Beggars I’m workin on, not sure how it will manifest itself yet but it’s gonna be heavy trust! I’ll also be playing Mario Kart a lot.
And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?
My lazers go zoop.
