Before we had the term nu disco, we had cosmic disco. Remember? When the likes of Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas pioneered this cute new sound, and before the electro kids jumped on it. Fellow Norwegian Diskjokke is another artist keeping that more Balearic end of the spectrum alive, with his new second album En Fin Tid blending that sunny vibe with Italo disco and electro motifs to gorgeous effect. Having appeared on both the aforementioned’s labels as well as remixing the likes of Metronomy, Lykke Li and Foals, he’s one of the darlings of the scene, and this wonderful blend of his own productions and other fluffy goodies makes for a hypnotic, mesmerising trip.
Sum up this podcast in 10 words...
It’s easily the bottom ten off the European dance chart!
What’s your personal favourite track on it?
Track three, where Rainer Truby shows his teeth for once. It’s floaty, pumping and magical at the same time.
What’s the special ingredient in this mix?
Well, behind the Ezequiel Sanchez Remix of Naif Super (in which the girl for some reason speaks Norwegian) I have put the break from a song of a fellow Oslo producer, Syntax Erik. It’s called The Whore and you can hear her perform her duties with eagerness for a couple of minutes.
What’s the best gig you’ve played recently?
A couple of weeks ago I got to play Robert Johnson in Frankfurt with Gerd Janson and Prins Thomas, and instead of the normal landing-goingtothehotel-dinner-gig business they had arranged a private barbecue for us on the terrace of the club before playing, the sun was setting, the river floated by and we had time to hang out and feel the club instead of just arriving ten minutes before playing. Gigwise; MAN those guys know how to work a floor so playing after them made shooting fish in a barrel seem difficult.
What have you got coming up?
Lots and lots. Most importantly there are a couple of 12"s being released July 19th, one on Full Pupp and one on Luna Flicks, both Norwegian labels. The one on FP is a bit of a Frankenstein EP: it has a Prins Thomas edit of 1987, an Ost & Kjex remix of Interpolation (from my first album, Staying In) and two original tracks from me that aren't on the new album. On Luna Flicks we are presenting a collaboration between Strangefruit from Mungolian Jet Set and myself. It was described to us as Mathew Jonson meeting up with Chic on a holiday in India.
The rest of the summer I am focusing on a very special ambient concert I am producing with 4 Indonesian gamelan artists. It is a one off concert ordered by the Øya Festival in Oslo. The result will be recorded and released on Smalltown Supersound in the fall. Furthermore, the 1987 remix single will be released in September, remixes coming from Londoners Richard Sen and Dreamtrak Diamond Sound.
And finally, do you have a special message for our readers
To the freaks: En Fin Tid will be released on vinyl shortly - look out for it in the shops or online stores in a couple of weeks. To the normal; come to fabric July 24th and have a peek inside Oslo's clublife as our night Sunkissed hits the club!
