When one of the world's most exciting DJs, Boys Noize, tells you to sit up and take notice of a hot new act, you'd be a fool to ignore him.
The Liverpudlian brotherhood of Paul and Alan Farrier grew up on a diet of European electronica, synth pop and American acid house and techno, before getting stuck into Manchester’s bustiling clubbing scene (Bugged Out!, Robodisco, Hacienda and so on). Although they’ve been producing for a decade now, it was in July of 2007 that they struck gold, getting their Shadow Dancer EP signed to to Boysnoize Records – the start of what would prove to be a very fruitful relationship.
Remixes for the cream of the electro scene like The Whip and Chromeo followed, and endless support from the scene’s leading lights – Digitalism, Erol Alkan, 2manydjs, Busy P…the lot. With their debut album, Golden Traxe, set to drop next month on Boysnoize, it’s the perfect time to stick them behind a pair of decks and get them to show us what they’re made of.
Enjoy this retro-focused mix of old skool house, electro, acid and techno, with some real club classics along the way....
Whats your favourite track on the mix?
Certainly not the coolest choice, but it would have to be Jean Michel Jarre - 'Arpeggiateur', simply because it's his fault we're doing all this now. I haven't liked any of his more recent output but I still have a huge amount of respect for him.
When I started the mix, it was the one track I was absolutely determined to fit in somewhere.
What's the special ingredient in this mix?
There's no fancy trickery as we're quite "old school" when it comes to mixing. It's not all about banging out the latest big tune, though.....we don't care how old a track is: if it's truly great, it's timeless, and people will still enjoy hearing it. And, hopefully, the newer crowds will be introduced to something they haven't been previously aware of, but which still sounds relevant.
What's the best gig you've played recently?
A night in Bienne, Switzerland, at La Coupole. It was just a big steel dome rising out of the snow-laden ground, which looked cool. Inside, it had great acoustics, atmosphere and a fairly open-minded crowd, which just completed the package for me.
What have you got coming up?
The debut album, Golden Traxe, is coming out on Boysnoize on February 23rd, which is obviously the biggest (and most exciting) thing. A good deal of 2009 will be taken up gigging around the world, and the little moments of free time will - fingers crossed - be taken up with getting some new productions finished ;)
And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?
We're also available for children's parties.
And MASSIVE sponsorship deals with clothing labels, music tech developers and a certain soft drinks company with a dire human rights record ;)
