There’s something so rewarding about a CD landing on your desk by someone you’ve never heard of and finding out that it’s amazing. Believe us, there’s a lot of crap that falls into the unknowns category, but Austria’s Clara Moto grabbed us as soon as we hit play. Shame on us for not being aware of her previously; she’s been bubbling away on Agoria’s Infiné label for a few years now, graduate from Red Bull Music Academy’s class of 2006, played Sonar and many of the world’s leading electronic festivals and clubs and found fans in the likes of Claude VonStroke, Silicone Soul and Paul Hazendonk.
Her debut album on Infiné, Polyamour, is an absolutely stunning collection of pretty, delicate melody and beatless soundscapes, and turgid, sexy tech house grooves with lashings of sub-bass and jacking percussion. Out at the start of April 2010, it’s one of this year’s essentials we reckon.
How and when were you first infected by dance music?
As a teenager I was listening to a lot of hip-hop, but also to Kruder & Dorfmeister and all that downbeat stuff. At 16 I went to my first techno parties and got absorbed by dance music. Then I moved into a flat with DJs and started to DJ by myself, and later I started make music.
When did you start making music / producing, and how long was it before you started making tracks that you were really happy with?
I think I started making music in 2005, after I saw a Korg Electribe at a friend`s place. As it was very easy to handle I bought the Electribe by myself and then started to use Ableton as well. I had a very intuitive approach and just created some loops. Now I also bought some other gear and software.
What have been your personal biggest inspirations?
Two of my all time favourite albums: Super Collider Head On, and Ricardo Villalobos Alcachofa.
Where does your name come from?
I wanted to keep my prename and was looking for a word that kind of fits to it and is short.
Who would you most like to work with?
I would like to work with Björk – I would be interested in how she works and I was a huge fan when I was young and still am.
What have you got in store for the coming months?
A new 12” on Infiné, and probably some remixes.
What can we expect from one of your DJ sets or live sets?
My DJ sets are mostly housey and deep. I do not like to play too hard, though sometimes it´s fun! I am working on a new live set, and try to involve Mimu as a singer.
If you weren’t a DJ/producer/artists, what would you be?
Cultural scientist.
Which other producers and DJs and artists do you really rate?
Dinky, Ricardo Villalobos, Scuba, Mount Kimbie, Omar S, Motorcitysoul, Chloe, Dorian Concept, many more...
