Spanish house music talent Uner grabbed our attention with his discofied, hard-grooving Raw Sweat EP on Diynamic last year alongside compadre Coyu. Absolute dancefloor gold, its big, bold funk grooves were a breath of fresh air from the droves of monotonous, plodding, loopy deep house that were cluttering the scene. Laurent Garnier, Luciano, Dennis Ferrer and Matthew Dear were amongst the fans, and since then he’s graced 2020 Vision, Cr2, Trapez and Defected, conquering both the underground and overground of house music.
Continuing a close working relationship with his heroes at Diynamic, he looks set to end up as one of 2010’s hottest properties.
How and when were you first infected by dance music?
I really started with the music when I was 4 years old, Playing the piano. But when I was 8 or 9 years old I discovered Jean-Michel Jarre and I felt in love with the electronic music. I started to listen all kind of electronic music and analog sound started to run into my veins.
When did you start making music / producing, and how long was it before you started making tracks that you were really happy with?
I started producing music with 15 years old. Very young. Experimental sounds. At the same age I started to play my live sets, with synths, samplers, etc etc…a true live act! And around 17 I signed my first stuff. Techno, and electronic pop. From that moment on my music and my live has been changing until now. But normally around house and tech house.
About my music, now I'm in an exciting personal moment. I have my own personality in my sound and I'm very comfortable with all my stuff and working in the studio and in the clubs, but during all my music career I have been doing the music that I felt in every moment.
Where does your name come from?
Ah ha, well…hmmm…if you listen to Raw Sweat in reverse, you can listen a voice speaking about the meaning of my name haha…it’s a joke with my friends! No, Really it’s a cool mix of some letters from my real name. I have chosen this name with difficult sense, and my pic without my face because I wanted people hear only the music without prejudice and without external influences. And let them know Uner for the music and not for the face. It was a big challenge to get this, but I think I'm on the way. And I'm really happy and grateful.
Who would you most like to work with?
One of my influences was Diynamic (It's true!), and my first track was released in Diynamic (I'm a lucky guy!) I'm working now with them (Solomun, Stimming, H.O.S.H., Adriano) and they were and are big names for me. But I would like to work in studio also with names like Gregor Tresher, Reboot, AFFKT (like my brother), Massimo Di Lena and all the people who have something to show! Because I think all the artists can learn from all the artists.
What have you got in store for the coming months?
I have good remixes for good friends, and labels…A Music (from Acumen…I'm a big fan!), Cr2, Stereo... and I have original tracks for Khazuma, Get Physical, and my new EP on Diynamic (my home)! And i'm starting my own label, Paulatine, with the first release from AFFKT. A great EP from my Spanish friend…will be a strong stuff for sure! And I have also 2 surprises for this year, but I will back to you with more info ASAP.
What can we expect from one of your DJ sets or live sets?
My sets are full of organic sounds, house, house and more house…I try to put all my groove, my music and my soul in my live sets and put all the feeling in the dancefloor! Edits, promos, my own unreleased tracks and a lot of music! I really like to give party, and enjoy with the people every special moments during the night.
What tracks never leave your record bag?
I have a lot of great tracks in my mind. And really, now I play some of this tracks! I like so much to show some of the electronic anthems in my sets, mixed with the modern sound. I think a good track don’t have an expiration date. Some of my fav track of the electronic music are, for example, Man With the Red Face (Laurent Garnier), Easy Lee (Villalobos) or Yamoré (Luciano with Salif Keita) among others… but in my sets you can listen other kind of classics too, it depends the moment.
If you weren’t a DJ/producer/artist, what would you be?
I'm sure about what would I be…the first vinyl, of the first edition of the Crispy Bacon from Laurent Garnier…it would be the perfect life if I weren’t DJ!
Which other producers and DJs and artists do you really rate?
Well. Really I rate all the people that have something special to show. With my personal tastes I love the sounds of Solomun, Stimming, H.O.S.H., Ame, Oxia, AFFKT, Acumen, Niggeman, Luciano, Dixon, Reboot, Martyn, all the big old school like Sneak, ATFC, Dennis Ferrer, Carl Craig, and big names like Laurent Garnier, Daft Punk, Depeche Mode, Justice, The Field etc… but it's difficult to choose a little example because I have listened a lot of music since I was a child and I have too much names in my mind.
