Young house music genius Manuel Tur was actually one of the very first New Talent features on Data Transmission back in early 2008 (gawd that makes us feel old), and our correct prediction of him blossoming into one of the scene’s most talented artists was fully vindicated. But since forming Ribn with fellow German deepster Langenberg, he’s added yet another feather to his bow, and over the last year this new(ish) project has seriously impressed us. Their remixes of Steve Bug’s Like It Should Be and their own This Feeling are in particular two of the freshest, classiest remixes of recent times.
Look out for a world exclusive Podcast coming from the duo for DT soon – a recording of their first ever live set. Deep atmospheric techno and hazy house…
How and when were you first infected by dance music?
Manuel Tur: I first got into dance music by the age of 13 when I used to listen to English radio broadcasts who would play all the latest house and techno stuff. Especially those French artists who were around at that time, such as Motorbass, Cassius or Alex Gopher seriously got me hooked on house music.
When did you start making music / producing, and how long was it before you started making tracks that you were really happy with?
Langenberg: I started making music in 2005 I guess. In 2007 I released my first 12” on berlin based label Resopal Red entitled Mrs. Future EP, which, at the same time, has been the first tracks I was happy with. When we hooked up as Ribn in 2008, it didn´t take too long until we had great results, even though the genre has been something new for us.
What have been your personal favourite tracks / productions so far?
Langenberg: Ribn – Ctrl/Shift (Styrax Leaves)
Manuel Tur: Dplay – Browse (Ribn Remix) (Drumpoet Community)
Where does your name come from?
Manuel Tur: Actually, the name comes from one of our favourite movies, Blue Velvet by David Lynch – those who have watched the film will certainly know which scene we're talking about!
Who would you most like to work with?
Langenberg: I actually have never been thinking about that. I think it´s important that things come together in an easy way. For the future I think that it´ll be fun to work with more classic musicians. Names are of no importance.
What have you got in store for the coming months?
Langenberg: First there will be our next Ribn 12” on Mild Pitch called Light Black EP”. I personally will drop a Langenberg 12” on Dessous Recordings in late June besides some remix works on different labels.
Manuel Tur: I'm currently writing a new solo album for Freerange that should be due for release in early 2011. Next up is a remix I did for Azari & III's Reckless (With Your Love) for Permanent Vacation.
What can we expect from one of your DJ sets or live sets?
Langenberg: We're performing as a live act only and I think it´s important to mention that we do not use computers in our setup at all. Only hardware synths, samplers, drum machines and effects. Definitely a fact that is noticeable in our music and live sets.
Manuel Tur: ...we only pre-program a couple of loops and sounds and then put everything together live. If we're not doing anything, the same loop will keep playing forever so every set can turn out very differently.
If you weren’t a DJ/producer/artists, what would you be?
Langenberg: I´m not sure about that, but certainly something concerned with music & arts.
Manuel Tur: Very hard to imagine, I've never done anything else!
Which other producers and DJs and artists do you really rate?
Langenberg: Certainly too many to mention. But I think right now we both really dig the new Caribou album!
Manuel Tur: We're constantly checking for new music so we'd always come up with new names and command each other to check out this band or that artist. As for dance music, I'm really into anything Actress is doing right now.
