Sei A – March Fledging French minimal label pride themselves on being different. “Don’t send us progressive house demos” says their MySpace. I like the ethos, and it helps to understand what they are trying to drive at with this release from Sei A known from his work with Crack & Speed and Soma.
There are two tracks and a remix on offer here; 'March of the Midi 'and 'Sei A' - the former also remixed by Gavin Herlihy.
It takes a couple of listens to wrap your head around this release, but for 'March of the Midi' it really is worth the effort. Chunky and melodic minimal house is the name of the game. It’s intelligent percussion drives a deep rumbling bassline, but it’s all about the melody, the beautifully crafted riffs (almost harp like in places) and spooky strings. I love the strange synth stabs that seem to come from nowhere.
The more I listen to this one the more it ingrains itself on me. I keep listening to it and I’m still not getting bored. It’s a very clever piece of music. It reminds me of that monstrous Isolee track 'Beau Mot Plage' updated in a minimal style.
The other track and remix, quite frankly, go right over my head. All the same, 'March of the Midi' is highly recommended if your floor is deep, or you like some interesting warm up material.
A label to watch.
