We have to admit that we didn’t even realise that German producer Phonique had launched his own record label ‘til this CD landed on our desks. Turns out, Ladies & Gentlemen is a very tasty label indeed.
There’s lots to recommend on this compilation which rounds up their first load of releases and some upcoming and unreleased bits, with not a dud in sight (or earshot, rather) There’s atmospheric, cinematic deepness on Vincenzo’s Return Of Sha, pretty Detroit bubbling on the dubby Break Night by Tigerskin, the rippling, shimmering beauty of Phonique’s edit of Modern Walker & Urban Absolutes’ No Problem, and the prog-tinged, hazy tingling of Boris Fox’s Dancefloor Dude.
The other side of the label caters for slower grooves, but ones that still hold a certain dancefloor charm. We get acid house meets nu disco coolness on Boris Fox’s The Fever , sleazy synth seduction on Talking Props’ I Can’t , Balearic funk on Rubini’s Gin Sonic and Phonique’s own, wonderfully funky and joyfully clichéd Disco Q.
A charming collection which once again shows why Phonique is one of the most consistent names in house music.
