Absolutely marvelous gear from the frequently genius-like Jackson here on the first part of Freerange’s landmark 100
th release double pack (congrats!). Take a simple, thudding, shimmering tech-house beat, squeeze in some deep bubbly bass, and top it all off with a slightly spooky, very almost out-of-tune lead line that soothes like classic house music keys but also twangs in parts like wonky techno – and you’ve got yourself a winner sir. The breakdown again hints at classic house with its refined string build, before we’re thrown headfirst back down into that gently warped, Kerri Chandler/Dennis Ferrer style bump. Some echoed, muffled Detroit stabs join in the fun just for kicks in the outro. Has been huge for the likes of Ewan Pearson, Justin Martin, Osunlade and Tom Findlay from Groove Armada.
Square One serve up a deep and mellow moment on ‘Twilight’ – coming across like an afterhours Pryda with its gently pulsing stabs, simple, looped bass, and bright, rising pads, while Manuel Tur is on fine form on ‘Boxed Sides’ – soft, heart-warming progressive house vibes with a soulful edge.
