Swayzak - Some Other Country

Masters of lush, smoky, hypnotic vocal tech house delicacies, Swayzak return to the mighty K7! with a brand new studio album. It doesn’t offer the immediate captivating energy of former efforts like the amazing ‘Dirty Dancing’ – or the diversity – but still has its moments. It’s all fragile, delicate electronica with the distant backbone of house music – with warm, soft textures and womb-like soundscapes abounding. The mournful ‘No Sad Goodbyes’ is like Slam at their deepest – honeyed, yearning, soulful male vocals from Richard Davis glide above boiled-down techy percussion, softly twanged Jew’s harps and dubbed out synths, while ‘Smile & Receive’ treads similar paths with graceful vocals from the multi-talented Cassy. Soul music for the 21st Century. On the downside, ‘Silent Luv’ borders on irritating with its’ incessant, shrill vocals, while ‘Pukka Bumbles’ is flimsy and forgettable. There seems to be a distinct lack of ideas here – with very little variation in tempo or style to be perfectly honest. There’s a few great tracks and over all it’s a fairly pleasant, relaxing listen – but if you want something really amazing go out and buy ‘Dirty Dancing’ from 2002 and find out why they are so revered.
