A vintage slice of Toolroom here – with Mark Knight expanding pleasingly on his current take on heads-down electronic house with a minimal sheen. Funkagenda’s recent bouncing minimal techno-styled groove ‘WTF’ was a great effort, so its no surprise they’ve come up trumps on this one. Stuttering, high-pitched percussion dances over quivering synth notes and subtle bass, with a simple, bubbling riff sprinkled over the top. A sultry, lazy male vocal runs the risk of coming across clichéd, but somehow manages to instead seem authentic. It’s left to a big reverbing, white-noisign breakdown to hammer the track’s point home, and the track throbs like a mofo when it drops. Simple but deadly.
Out of the remixes, Jimpster rinses out murky acid house bass and sexy shaker patterns before wheeling out the deep, hazy house chords, Wally Lopez mixes the mood of classic prog with tribal-tinged techy percussion, and Exacta keeps things low key with a plodding, old skool bassline and ticking hi-hats. Mark Knight & Funkagenda provide 2 mixes with the Trusty Djembe Dub a mildly annoying excursion through Popcorn-style riffage and little else, and the Average House Band Remix a fun little electronic funk downtempo groover.
