Extracted from his forthcoming debut album on Great Stuff Recordings, the EP Sunka Sanka Pt1 by the rising producer Ramon Tapia gives us a little taste of what he is into at the moment. Whilst this EP still features the clinical techy beats in his previous releases, his tracks sound a bit more organic and playful this time.
In Sunka Sanka, on top of the techy percussion there is the FX twisted and metallic vox that appears in a rather playful manner; plus the rolling bassline, the track has a funky and organic groove contrasting with the darker edge in his previous productions.
This EP also includes a remix of Sunka Sanka by the Spanish duo Coyu & Edu Imbernon, who took a heavier approach. The metallic vox is still there, but the bold tribal drums and frantic hi-hats carry a lot more energy to the track; and the presence of the crowd-favoured breakdowns makes it clear that it is a very dancefloor-oriented affair.
Whilst the pulsing hi-hats and the strong 4/4 techno rhythm in You Know make this affair more techy, the subtler use of vox, the metallic stabs along with the pulsating bassline render a fluid and rolling groove that will keep the listener moving.
The finale Carousel sees the most delicate, and the most melodic side of the EP. Without the industrial components featured in the EP, it is a lighthearted affair driven by the intricate and joyous synth riffs. It sounds refreshing alongside other tracks in the EP and certainly enriches the depth of it.
Indeed, this EP is a decent taster for Tapia’s upcoming artist album, and it is good to see him experiment with different sounds. Nothing groundbreaking here, but the tracks would certainly work well on the dancefloor. Hopefully we will see bigger surprises in his debut album.
