Various Artists mixed by Sven Vath - In The Mix: The Sound Of The Tenth Season

Eschewing a simple selection of big summer anthems from the usual suspects, Papa Sven decided to largely look to the future with The Sound Of The 10^th Season, mostly focusing on new and upcoming talents as a forward-thinking bookend to his party’s first decade.
 
Alejandro Mosso’s Somebody launches the mix in a bumpy, rolling tech house fashion, all sultry and low-slung and smokey, before Anthea and Celler inject some skippy hats into the mix on Cedamon Loop. The bass booms, the disco loops roll – so far, so Sven. Next we head into the deep, instrumental, hypnotic climbs that he loves – Michel Cleis’ slow-burning reworking of Spencer Parker’s The Beginning gradually seducing you with its incessant pianos, distant bongos and tribal, jungle-style rhythm. Nico Purman’s re-rub of Sebastien Lutz’s I’m Telling You edges in some darker, brooding tones, leading us towards the wonky throb of Electric Rescue’s The Darkest Star
 
After this deep and disorientating section, Ahmet Sisman’s remix of Franco Cazzola’s In Mexico With You brings an element of fun back into the mix, with a big tribal groove and ethnic chants transporting you to the dancefloor of Cocoon at Amnesia. Ebert’s Magie treads the line with a bumping groove and a heady, stuttering main motif continuing the deep techno big room feel and teasing you with its rasping intensity.
 
We get really wrong towards the end – the manic bagpipes (I think?) and jacking, metallic techno wiggle of Umek’s Pravim Haos and Marc Marzenit’s Not Assigned laying its sinister, brainmashing riffs over the mix. Illario Alicante’s Living in Africa provides a heady closer, littered with disorientating dialogue and tribalism.
 
It’s not a classic Sven mix, and one that you might find hard going to listen to if you’re not in the mindset of a big, dark, smokey club. Otherwise, it’s a good snapshot to transport you back to Amnesia, or wherever else you saw Sven wreak havoc this year.
