Freaks - UMakeNoSense

Following the success of their smash hit anthem The Creeps a couple of years ago, Freaks (co-founded by Justin Harris and Luke Solomon in 1994) are back with UMakeNoSense, a single that, rather than aiming to hit the UK chart again, experiments in a playful and adventurous style.
On the original mix of UMakeNoSense, whilst the momentum rendered from the driving rhythm and melodies in the second half of the track is dancefloor-friendly, as the track unfolds from the beginning, the retro, heavily tweaked synths and the FX twisted vocal parts altogether generate a playful yet refined vibe that goes beyond the utility of this interesting affair. It may not be as easy to fit into a set as other typical house and techno tracks do, but surely a fun track to listen to and play on certain occasions.

Techno don Radio Slave is on the remix duty, and he attempts to infuse the playful vibe into the snappy beats and punchy bass on his Rekid Riddim Remix. The vox and synths of the original still play a big part - especially the synths, whose interlacements take over to construct the track’s last couple of minutes in a drumless fashion.

Whilst some may think that the remix by the Rekids label boss lacks the dark and throbbing power that he usually delivers, his digital only Music For Freaks Remix will make them more than happy. With the pounding rhythm, hypnotic vox and spacey FX, this industrial, thumping techno affair forcefully drags the listener back to the cavernous setting again. An absolute peak-time monster.

A coherent release on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels imprint, this EP encapsulates both the conceptual and practical aspects of dance music. And although the Riddim Remix may not be amongst the best of Radio Slave’s productions, it does serve as the bridge between the other two very different versions and link them up tightly. A decent effort indeed.
