The SOS boys Omid, Demi &
Desyn are given first tilt at MOS’ new compilation angle. The Ministry
residents’ double disc mix, full of their own edits and notably quick
interchanges, is a strong supporter of there being a place for everything with
everything in its place. Gradual expansions, opening with some synth-heavy
elevation and noses poking around corners, set dancefloor wheels in motion
piece by piece. Sex on Substance by name and nature, offering long un-wilting tech
performance with just the right amount of funky deviation to curl toes with
marksman’s accuracy.
Their own
Changing Your Mind is a font of weighty tech kicks and synth
ski-ing early on, followed by Stereofunk drawing more numbers onto the launch
pad with concerted tetchiness. The big breakout tune is MCDE’s Bassline dub of
Sprinkles; driving acid-washed pump, although teasingly it’s not given enough
roof-raising time. Enough tone is set though for SOS to kick on, with Pete
Herbert’s Silver City
Pendulo mix
stirring Moroder-disco mesmerisation. The electro-firing sweep of Steve
Angello’s
Isabel puts the dancefloor
in a glistening but no less serious light, and added to the ballsy thoroughfare
of Audio Soul Project, continues SOS’ snubbing of frivolity, especially with
Hardrive’s
Deep Inside using a
familiar vocal and a bitching acid jack. Clubs aren’t for meeting people,
catching up with friends or enjoying a late night drink. They’re for dancing,
in your own self-sufficient zone, grittily. No booth-rushing allowed either;
just cram and get knowledgeable.
The likes of Omid 16B’s
The Epic – another well-named selection
– offer marginally more camaraderie between dancefloor patrons, with its simple
downward synth movements and reflective guitar twangs, and funky teasers are delivered
at arm’s length from Scope & S-Groove and Luca Guerrieri & Stefano S’s
tantalising trumpet play. Greatest leeway is given when SOS close disc one with
an attempt at arm-linking happiness through Albin Myers’ tired sampling of the
Foo Fighters.
The oddly lopsided disc two – it’s still 13 tracks compared to the previous 28, regardless
of disc one’s swift turnovers
– feels its way again with the pure acid of Omid 16B’s
Can’t Deny The Three, a tentatively lovely, at peace throwback. It
straight juxtaposes his stonier-jawed hook-up with Da Billa, all moody beats
and un-rosy acid probing and examination. The vibe evens out about half way
through, with Laterna Project’s
Beach
Combers going for terrace lookout calm, and the preceding austerity
evaporates in an instant with the composure having been earned. Omid 16B goes
from sweating jack maniac to upper class toe-tapper. Still working angles and
positions, SOS drop Ronato Cohen’s
Acid and
Darkpunk’s
Alechaoes to show the
steel hasn’t left early, before Fred Falke’s filtered jitterbug
Back to Stay is elected the
tie-loosening, slipper-wearing exaltation to close with through traditional
French house values.
Groove-ready, but with a concentration to it,
SOS won’t be put off their stride. Save for the likes of Bushwacka’s
self-explanatory
Show of Hands, their
MOS presentation speaks for a disciplined, well constructed time trial to savour.
