Following on from the highly successful Sick Music compilation last year, everyone’s favourite public sector institution bring us the second instalment in the series.
Beginning the 22-track compilation album with what will undoubtedly be remembered as one of 2010’s iconic tunes, Netsky’s Memory Lane, things get off to a sunny and uplifting start on Sick Music 2. Showcasing the friendly and familiar faces - names like London Elektricity, Logistics, Cyantific, Nu:Tone - alongside the not-so-familiar – Enei, MRSA, Royalston + Mark Berry - it’s an album which shows the label’s past, present and future in one fell swoop. Along the way, we have landmark tunes such as emerging Austrian talent, Camo & Krooked’s Turn Up (The Music), Reso’s synth-soaring Slap Chop, and the trance-like, slightly ethereal, twinkling sounds of Jonny L’s 1 N 2. A special mention must go to the fantastic remix London Elektrciity’s Bare Religion by recent signing, and shining star from afar, Subwave. Elsewhere on CD1, Sonic makes a welcomed return with All I Wanna Do, Wilkinson’s Hypnosis throws in some edginess and DKay & Rawfull bring the first half to a close with moody, murmuring number, Directions, followed by Dan Habarnam's dark meditation, No Ballast.
On CD2, the shimmering, intergalactic sounds of Nu: Tone’s Battle Theme provide us with a gentle intro into the second half of the compilation, before Muffler’s Pinball Fantasy Remix ups the energy factor, with a big injection of rave tinged synths and drum rolling fury. The dubiously named MRSA takes things a bit darker, with growling bass-driven number, Chemicals. Massive shout outs to The Upbeats for their superb remix of Shapeshifter’s Twin Galaxies around the half way point of CD2 – a personal favourite, it’s a deliciously soulful, vocal-driven, sultry roller, oozing with atmospheric bliss. But before we get too comfortable, things are shaken up by Agent Alvin, plus another change in pace and style by Blokhe4d’s (Maldini, Vegas and Uman FYI) deeper cut, Sunscreen, beforefinishing up with Stanza’s delicately named, evocative Rose Garden, heralding a stylish finale to the album.
