Dinky - Musica Libre

Dinky is one of those names that’s floated around the cooler house & tech circles over the past few years, impressing many a discerning aficionado but never threatening to break through to the biggest leagues. Nonetheless, Sven Väth signed Dinky up as a resident for Cocoon Ibiza alongside her fellow countryman and buddy Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin, and she mixes their summer promo CD that year too. Quite the baptism of fire.
It’s a while before this mix really grabs your attention. It’s all pretty uneventful, deep, mildly trippy and dubby at first, and the first section passes by barely noticed. Slowly it draws you in, with Mr. V’s cool and bumpy Dubinstrumental of Demarkus Lewis feat. Lady Sah’s Untitled Love tickling the tastebuds and Soul Capsule’s Overcome pumping up the energy with its punchy kicks, shuffling percussion and womping subs. Following this housey injection, she takes us in a weird and wonky direction with the bugged-out spacey tech of The Updates’ So Happy and the acid ‘n’ trumpet wiggle of Danuel Tate’s She Likes You?
After more minimal posturing, the chunk factor returns bigger than before with Roman Flügel’s pumping remix of Motorcitysoul’s Vivid and the deep soul shake of Damian Schwartz’s Holloway. Amidst all this subtlety and deepness, Tensnake’s mesmerising In The End (I Want To Cry) shines brighter than ever, a euphoric, tingling treat that breaks through from the depths of this mix to slather you in joyous melancholy. Her own shimmering Paquita continues the disco vibe in a super-stripped back way, and things then drop back into dusty smokiness with Blunted Dummies’ hazy House For All. The final section keeps it minimal and slight, with Bruno Pronsato’s Lovers Do laying on some jazzy, tasteful pianos on, but the attention soon wavers and it’s a lacklustre finish.
It makes for a frustrating listen – at times very dry, then later very rewarding after your patience has been given, but ultimately not strong enough at either end to make for anything seriously memorable.
