Every Monday night in Ibiza, Sven Väth will bring a carefully selected crop of his Cocoon Party Animals to Amnesia to tear up its famed dancefloor. Never one to exclude those that can’t make it across, the pint sized German alleviates the woes of the trapped with a double CD package to support their Ibiza residency. Following on from last year’s Ten Years Cocoon Ibiza and now the fourth installment of their pre-summer mix series, Party Animals is mixed by two of the prolific imprint’s finest talents, Marco Carola and Nick Curly. Both artists give a proper view of what’s shaking Cocoon’s floors week in, week out across their own discs. Carola has been in the Cocoon fold for nearly a decade now, first appearing on Cocoon Compilation A back in 2000 whilst Nick Curly is one of the new breed, making his debut for the label only last year. Each producer brings their own take of the Cocoon experience and brings it alive for those who have already been over to the white isle and want to reminisce as much as they do for those who are crossing off the days on their calendar before their annual pilgrimage.
Italian Carola is at the helm of the first disc and we find him in a sultrily and percussive mood whilst showcasing his ever lean and funky brand of minimalism. His mix bubbles away with an undertow of intensity whilst he continues his support for emerging artists with the inclusion of productions from relative unknowns such Kobaalt and fellow Italian Reisak. He also gives a nod to his homeland’s Neapolitan techno sound with the churning basslines of his compatriot Joseph Capriati’s Tapa Boca. As the mix continues to build we reach Carola’s arm punching finale with Martin Buttrich’s Hoochie Mama and Audiofly’s remix of Layo & Bushwacka’s The Longest Day.
Mannheim’s enigmatic Nick Curly takes control for the second disc, bringing a highly energetic mix of deep house and techno. Grounded in some solid, hypnotic house, Curly blends in soulful vocals and elements of dub, techno and jazz to create a wholly engaging exploration of the sounds of his dance floor. Taking on a more organic sound than his predecessor, Curly captures the essence of Amnesia’s balmy terrace with tracks from the likes of Steffen Deux, Sascha Dive, Horacio, Mihai Popoviciu and Markus Fix.
