The A Skillz commandeering of the terribly-named Yorkshire crew and Glasto prize-winners Grinny Grandad is a Sonny J-ish arm around the shoulder of triple jump funk to make pedestrians perform spontaneous backflips. Building on the Jam City opener Misdemeanour, it definitely shows that Skillz is onto something with his non-breaks breakaway, fitting snugly into the niche of funk where you’re never quite sure of what’s sampled and sourced and what’s come direct from the happy to play hippy side of the producer’s brain.
Kymberley Kennedy is the vocal traffic stopper, Skillz’s organist gets super freaky with possessed fingers, while horn players amass into a flash mob street march. There’s a slapstick sitcom/classic cartoon feel to all the prancing and parading where a party could break out anywhere at any moment on Sesame Street, and it has the cheer to cause joint displacement. If you think you haven’t heard a flourish of Go! Team pageantry in a while, here’s your shot of sunshine ready and waiting for you.
