A Kitsune compilation is usually a bit of a minefield, with a clutch of gems hidden amongst some bland indie dance and forgettable, dated electro. However, when crossed with London fashionista party Ponystep, the results are absolutely blinding.
This compilation runs the gamut of euphoric electro and more pumping nu disco flavours, and keeps you hooked from start to finish. Róisín Murphy kicks off with a seriously sassy proposition in Momma’s Place, there’s more cool vocals later on from David E Sugar’s anti-ket anthm Party Killer, Jupiter’s fun rework of Junior’s Mama Used To Say, and Aeroplane’s glorious remix of Das Pop’s Fool For Love at the end.
There’s lots of lovely trancey flavour running through the mix too, with the twinkling feel of Voltaire’s D.I.L.and D Pulse’s funked-up Italo jam Highway To Saturn, euphoric ‘80s pop style gear in JBAG feat. Louise Prey’s X Ray Sex and Munk’s bright and breezy La Musica, ‘90s piano house gets a look in with Adamski’s I Dream Of You and there’s a nod to disco proper on In Flagranti’s spunky remix of Act Yo Ages’ La Fumo Loco. Add in some afro-electro from Myd’s remix of Rainbow Arabia’s Holidays In Congo, some deep, hypnotic Booka Shade and a rousing climax from Mustang, and you’ve got an absolutely wonderful compilation.
JBAG’s keeps you on his toes with the continually morphing sound of this album and some of his great re-edits, and we commend him for giving us such a wonderful summer mix. Feel-good, top quality gear, we can’t recommend it enough.
