24 year old Rob Kemp, known to the likes of you and me as the mighty Brackles, makes his trademark stamp within the underground electronic music scene with this eclectic medley of musical gems. He's has already released records out on cutting-edge imprints like Planet Mu, Applepips, Berkane Sol and Pollen, and this year he continues in full swing exhibiting not only his prowess as a producer but also working alongside fellow beat fiend Shortstuff to manage their record label Blunted Robots.
As the garish and somewhat aggressive jump-up sound of UK dubstep begins to lose its original allure, music lovers are moving to the pulse of a different kind of beat. Brackles' mix comprises a selection of quirky and sexy new sounds, epitomising funky post-dubstep and celebrating a much more organic and progressive musicality. This debut compilation sees him play around with garage-soaked rhythms and funky house glazed melodies and truly demonstrates the finesse of his musical palette. Brackles quenches our insatiable thirst for fresh talent by offering up a sizeable slice of new blood from the likes of Funkineven and Breach, who are setting the barrier high for 2011.
Brackles captivates us from the offset with the squelchy and strangely addictive Mr Chippy by Flying Lotus. He takes us on an exquisitely tailored journey, moving from a minimal house vibe into a funked-up futuristic-garage utopia. He panders to our taste buds by evoking memories of our long-lost childhood days by interweaving glitchy sounds akin to those on our old Nintendos with a soft and bubbly beat. Martin Kemp's No Charisma combines unrelenting space-age bleeps and blips with sporadic dub vocals escaping from the confines of a single genre with an exciting multi-layered sound. Multi Dub Refix brings a Cafe del Mar vibe with its ambient, loose tempo before he cranks up the pace again with DJ Dom’s juicy Sunshowers.
At the heart of this album we have Speechless by DJ Mystery. This token carnival banger infuses that old school garage sound with a relentless Latino vocal sample, before we move deeper in and get mesmerised by Deadboy’s stunnng If You Want Me. The tight throbbing rhythm is overlaid with a sexy, sumptuous vocal bringing a glittering and uplifting energy that is unparalleled throughout the entire album. Synth wiz Dorian Concept’s classic Trilingual Dance Sexperience, the penultimate track on the album, is a funked-up banger – what a Daedelus track might sound like on speed. Brackles chooses a Funkineven track for the outro, recently released on Alexander Nut’s Eglo Records. The entrancing vocals throughout are a fitting summary for the album as a whole, which had me engrossed from start to finish.
