Fatboy Slim vs Thomas Gold - Star 69

After Koen Groeneveld and Fedde Le Grand’s attempts comes another European house re-hash of a Fatboy Slim classic.

Gold’s production quality is rarely rivalled in his scene, and the width and space on his mixes give a sound that’s something to behold. The Original focuses on a thumping, tough-edged tribal rhythm, with darkly-tinged, fizzing stabs hammering the point home, before the track unfolds into a simple but emotive breakdown – but it’s back to potent stomping thereafter. The vocal is no longer the main point, just an accessory – probably wise given how many times we’ve heard it.

That said, the WTF Mix goes in the opposite of the direction, letting it take more of a starring role (as the name would suggest). A cool groove is crafted from stabs and bubbling analog bass, leading us to a frenzied breakdown – before we drop back into the techified bounce and roll. Heads down, moodier stuff – the sort of stuff you hear the Swedish House Mafia punctuating the more uplifting moments in their sets with.
