Gregor Tresher’s debut album A Thousand Nights was a mixed bag: a handful of stunning tracks, and the rest a dull, repetitive, tired slog. Here, the album is given a second lease of life thanks to some great remixes.
Tresher gives Black Rain a going over himself – turning it into a bouncing hypnotic slice of minimal techno with foreboding, metallic stabs and rhythmic pops adding to the jaunty rhythm of the track. The playfulness of the rhythm is juxtaposed interestingly with the moody, dark textures and notes – a breath of fresh air from the myriad of tracks with such a tone but devoid of energy.
Dubfire’s Quiet Storm mix of the title track is typically unassuming – a simple grunting, muted bassline ripping chunks out of the light percussion, with the main, Gui Boratto-style euphoric riff slowly rising out of the murky depths. Dubfire’s Dubstrumental is the same but with said riff replaced by mind-bending, pitch-shifting machine whirring and aspringy, gentle techno hook. Extrawelt meanwhile take us down a deep, bubbly route, with warm, caressing waves of Subbass, soft clicks and delicately placed snippets of the lead riff. Finally Patrick Zigon goes for a more deep house tip, with dubby pad swirls and chopped-up segments of the riff punctuating the low-slung bassline.
