5 tracker minimal techno EP from the Bavarian producer best known for his remix of Talk Talk’s classic Such a Shame.
First up is Cronicles a tight minimal techno groove punctuated with short bursts of bass and overclocked percussion. It’s all about the groove here, a sound that will boom on a big system but be warned – this is proper minimal. Rollover is an altogether darker affair, utilising weird creaks and clicks and wooshy loops, perhaps owing a debt to Markus’ more ambient side.
Histrionics is the best track on the able but, perhaps, it is also the least minimal. A deep bassline is overlaid with some nice bubbly analogue and clever percussion that really drive this track. The looped analogue string picks up the pace in the break giving us a useable, but underground track. My only problem here is the way Histrionics ends. For a track that will almost exclusively appeal to DJs it isn’t that easy to mix out of.
Send Things Flying is a variation on a theme, but is a big groove for a piece of minimal techno with its harsh analogue overtones building to a crescendo. Wilderness brings down the tempo but continues the theme of heavy drums and tight percussion.
A good value EP if you like your techno minimal with the exception of Histrionics, a more driving, even bouncy, piece of house music.
