Instead of
Bam Bam
getting savage with a prehistoric club as all semantics point to, Ben Hackman brings
a wiry, supple bodied sense of deep house and garage sophistication to the fore.
It’s something that you can’t necessarily explain given the paucity of elements
– the same goes for whether Hackman is ice cold or bringing matters to the boil
- but nonetheless ‘tis a groove you know is perfect if you have a habit of
going clubbing in glass slippers and where a little plumping of bass and a
chirp of chimes takes the minimalism to task. The echo of the chopped up,
Adele-ish vocal hangs in the air spectre-like to impeccably frame the air of
recoiling mists and there being an unwritten rule not to interrupt the oral
hieroglyphs.
Made Up
My Mind
has some old Detroit acid about it to assist UKG/deep
house frontage, again ensuring it’s well heeled over anything clunky despite
the presence of a robotic vocal weave, percussive blinks that could have been a
Speak 'n' Spell in a previous life and synth slinks greeting MJ Cole’s Sincere. The attendance of bass just
fumbling around by itself in the background in a pique of techno glumness is
the clincher to this being nearest to a '90s garage roll, though the
straight-ahead nature of the beats apply a pinch of categorising as you see
fit. An ass-shaker with the meanness to go with the leanness.
