Time for a deep chugger from Nottingham’s Gatecrasher
resident, who if inbox updates are anything to go by, always seems to have
something on the go. If you’ve switched off at the words ‘deep chugger’, there
is at least a feature of interesting percussion playing a ribcage xylophone, or
Lyman manipulating a soda-stream for Disney. Gradually building some character,
Lyman provokes activity to turn Tozer from
sullen windbag into something with much more to its game than just an ABC in basic
dancefloor trudging. Banging on piano keys amongst inquisitive nudging and
nurdling, he gives this an outside shot at lighting up Ibizan skies this
summer, in a mutedly euphoric manner all about business and snubbing the
pleasure and glamour that usually follows. What it has to do with a certain
ex-member of Steps...nah, you’ll have guessed that line was coming.
Picked up on by the likes of Tom Novy, Witchcraft sees Lyman at the cauldron
and taking his time with his eye of newt, a resiliently unwavering toiler of
trouble calmly warning you not to look at him in the wrong way. Quietly
plotting to itself, always on the edge of something cacophonic and always
pulling back the threat of revealing its secrets, Lyman’s B-side has the
ability to rise up and shoot bolts of illumination from bleak foundations, everpresent synth work turning up the heat on what he’s stirring. It will make
a whole lot more sense when a full moon has positioned itself over the shoulder
of the DJ booth, where just letting you know it’s there is all the caution
that’s required.
