Over the years, the seminal grime and dubstep (and now bassline house) pirate radio station Rinse, owned by Geeneus, has radiated cutting edge underground music including the sounds of Wiley, Skream and Dizzee over its London based frequencies. It has also solidly imprinted its certified mark as one of the leading entities in dubstep.
The Rinse collections are usually known for showcasing the rawest and freshest sounds from the dubstep scene with past features from Hatcha, N-Type and Youngsta. This CD undoubtedly highlights the full spectrum of the station and offers the missing link between grime and dubstep. This is highlighted by the inclusion of Wiley’s waring rolling Eskimo, Benga and Coki’s anti-anthem Night and the darting vocals of Frisko’s Skengman Mode featuring Chipmunk and Double S.
The 26 tracks are roughly and edgily mixed in true grime fashion by Boy Better Know’s Skepta. The producer, mic-man and self professed King of Grime unleashes more than a sprinkling of simple yet effective bass heavy riddims.
On the surface it may be said this edition has a different direction than what we’re used to from the series. Nonetheless the choice of Skepta is indeed a logical step as he delves into, excuse a pun - but the grimier and grittier sounds of the street, with the Ayia Napa smash Mr Bean by Apple, sibling JME’s Deadout and a handful of his own productions, namely his remix of Skream’s Midnight Request Line.
In all, Rinse 04 is an interesting and insightful listen that adequately envelopes the evolutionary paths of UK garage. Whack your fresh summer New Era on, tie up your Force 1 laces tight , bump up your system and Grime-Step it out.
