Young Amsterdam jock Terry Toner meets Smash TV on the remix for one of those rare records that defies genres. Eat the Positive is a little bit of electro, deep house and jackin’ house rolled up into a bar and club playable package. Accessible without being commercial you feel like you’ve heard before with its distinctive sounds and melodies. Sebastian Leger used it on his recent Essential <ix and James Talk on his latest mixtape but it hasn’t been over exposed by any means. If you like your house commercial you may like to switch the channel about now for this is more schnapps in Berlin than beer in Blackpool.
Tight electro style drums and percussion punctuated with zaps, clicks and clacks and a shuffling groove lead us into a distinctive synth melody and rumbling bass that really define this track. It’s actually a long intro at a minute and a half before anything else really happens, but this is all about simple melodies and groove. The bass sounds are impeccable, strong but not in your face, it’s a rumbling, room shaker of a sound. There are some great horns adding to the melody and an underlying off-beat skank that drive it all through. Just when you’re settling into the groove at about four minutes some effects are added to the drums which really lifts the track – not much but enough to drive it forward a little more.
This is solid, yet quirky, club fodder. It’s all about the arrangement and the clever use of carefully selected sounds. A grower.
