Guy Gerber - Disorientations

One of the strongest Guy Gerber tracks in a while here, and his first solo release in a while. It’s a very subtle piece of deep, atmospheric house music that builds very gradually. The departure point is a live-sounding drum pattern, and warm, very low-slung bass tones that weave a sexy melody. We then get echoing vocal snippets sinking into this deep abyss, brooding, monotone violin stabs creating a ticking on-beat rhythm, heady, dream-like synths, and a warped, wonking saxophone sample. In terms of comparisons, we’re talking Jeff Bennett meets a deeper Groove Armada house instrumental. Which can only be a good thing.

Our current fave Johnny D turns in another useful little workout – not one of his finest but it will still rip dancefloor apart with its infectious rhythms (get your woodblock out) and his trademark, pure, undulating bass tones, and great use of the saxophone and other live instruments from the original. The crescendo of keys towards the end is a subtle, slow burning delight. May be a touch too cluttered or hectic for some in places.

Another currently hot name, Reboot pip Johnny D to the post on this one with an even cheekier little wiggler. The deep bassline springs energetically atop the thuddy kicks, while at the top end metallic rhythms tick away in a naughty fashion, while lo-bit claps and an array of driving hats fill in the gaps. It might not stick in your head, but it certainly knows how to shake its thing.

A bloody great package all round – buy them all.
