Mason - The Ridge

Mason's pieced together a track which at the same time feels epic and miniscule. The intertwining, dramatic synths and almost tranquil percussion give this the feeling that it should be a winner. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but to me, it's not quite. It's hard to describe where it fits on the electronic spectrum: the nearest I can get is that it sounds kind of like a track which didn't make the cut on a Booka Shade album. I really can't see the original edit being played out very much, and while Tomcraft's mix makes it a little bit more danceable by adding in a pronounced drum pattern, it still relies on the epic synths multiple times, which inevitably bring any pace the track gathers down to a breakdown. The third edit on the release is a techy interpretation of the same kind of difficulties.
It's inevitable: everyone's going to compare this to Exceeder, and it just doesn't quite manage to operate on the same kind of levels.
