Samuels excels himself yet again with this new 3-track EP, which is even better than his first strong effort for Toolroom. Lead track Much Love is a revelation – imagine Underworld at their murkiest, most hypnotic, given a proggy tint and reined in to a more refined, less cluttered sound. It’s lead by a galloping, guttural, double-studded bass, and subtle techy percussion driving along underneath, and little else in the way of frills aside from a big build up. The b-line is the track, and it’s full of dark energy that makes this, in a way, his most accomplished sounding track yet.
The other two are winners to boot. Close To is gorgeous groovy progressive house with gently euphoric chord progressions, Ibizan synth stabs and stuttering beats and some great contrasts in mood, while Tomorrow Today treads a similar route, all dubby pads and string blasts laced beneath a cool, breezy prog bassline and dainty piano chords – but keeps the mood sombre rather than twisting into happier realms.
