Brian Carson and Scott Arkwell have done their homework on their featured guest. Alt-rapper and fellow Canadian representer Josh Martinez rhymes suggestively like the shoulder-shrugging wiseguy and sometime letch that he’s built his career out of. Though it’s unclear why he has to do so through one of those espionage-tuned mics that are sunk low in the mix and mean you’re gonna have your work cut out as to understanding what beelines the one half of The Chicharones is making.
Anyhow, back to where Wicked Lester earn their stripes. Backed up by a pair of Ali B edits, Might As Well is a pleasing rump shaker of a hoe-down, centring on a funk-folk bassline (bonus points for the extremely tidy lil’ blues solo) that jangles along up and down like a downed-to-earth version of Pass the Courvoisier. It proves mighty handy given Martinez never left home without his guitar on the lives and times of Buck Up Princess.
What you don’t expect on the remix is for Air duo Diverted to slap down a hip-house wobble featuring a large and winding synth growl on some grime steez that usually features a mammoth posse shot. There remain traces of the original’s funk swagger, but only cop this one if you wanna hear Martinez in totally alien surroundings. Yes, that’s kind of the point, but it almost oversteps the line of alteration.
