VA - Full Body Workout Vol. 4

Although DJ T’s Get Physical imprint hasn’t served up many top-draw tracks in recent months, this label comp showcasing forthcoming and current material shows that they still very much know what they’re up to.
 
A torrent of grubby, throbbing bass beats us liked a Diazepam-induced heartbeat at the door, with superbly sexy tabla rhythms soon emerging from the murky depths. Slowly you’re seduced into the mix with trippy noises, deep techy stabs and thuddy kicks, and the lingering tempo of the first couple tunes serves as an unhurried and effortless intro. Daniel Merhart’s Redrum Society bugs out with eerie saxophones and hypnotic woodblock ticking, and gradually we get a semblance of the mix picking up some pace and energy.
 
Out of the techy depths comes Electrochemie’s soulful electro joint Starstruck (Revisited), a classy and unexpected vocal treat that breaks up the 4/4 rhythms, before the crystalline, delicate textures of Dakar’s Milking The Cash Cow seep in with deep tech house intent. Djuma Soundsystems’ gorgeous Small Fries continues the theme – all warm haunting melodies, sumptuous and soothing bass – with Ida Engberg & David West’s The Giant From Nibiru signalling a shift in gears with its sprightly electro house chords, stuttering, metallic percussive elements and generally big riffage. Patrice Bäumel ups the dirt factor with the off-beat throb of his harrowing Javelin, with the wonky acid house of Lopazz’s Live In Brazil bringing us back to earth somewhat. Omurah’s Colefire completes the bell curve of intensity, bringing us back down to earth with a frankly disappointing and forgettable ending that should have been placed earlier on in the mix.
 
A very enjoyable mix overall, but it just misses out on being a classic thanks to the deflated finale.
