Dan Curtin - Beat Fiend EP

After a wildly successful 2008, Mobilee can look nowhere but up for '09. To mark their first release of the new year, Dan Curtin has returned to the trenches with his newest weapon, Beat Fiend.
Now that everyone's New Year's hangovers are over, we could all use a little pick-me-up; and it appears Dan is happy to cater to our needs. Beat Fiend certainly produces a quick buzz, as tight organic percussion weaves through clever key sequences, causing tension and energy to increase with each passing bar. But what is the fiend chasing after, you ask? Apparently the fiend is chasing the big bassline - which doesn't make it's way into the picture until the five-minute mark. But once it kicks in, the rush is felt immediately. Suddenly everything feels tingly and exciting, and at that very moment the message of The Fiend" is delivered with crystal clarity.

On the flip side, the fiend emerges from his state of ecstasy and quickly floats off into a bad mescaline trip. Amphibian is brutally grotesque, yet in such a good way. The shuffling chords and troubled vocal snippets call and respond to each other in a way that causes one to feel as if they've been watching The Shining. A plethora of emotion is brought to the surface when listening to Amphibian, and whether it be good or bad, you certainly can't argue the strength of this tune. On second thought, you can't really argue the strength of this EP as a whole. I know it's got me hooked. Perhaps I am the beat fiend?
