Nôze - You Have To Dance

You know what you’re getting with Nôze. Plenty of quirk, lashings of Frenchness, jazz and swing, kooky singing, and a tech house groove underneath. No surprises on You Have To Dance then really – a cool, funked-up b-line underpins their scat-style vocal punctuation and whistling, while the oompah-oompah chorus just screams Allo Allo somehow. Fun, silly stuff as usual – although they could have included an instrumental version, the vocals being a highly acquired taste as usual.
The remixes are exemplary however. Mathias Kaden extrapolates the jazzy groove but removes the sung vocals, leaving us only with “bad-da-bom” snippets and the eerie whistling. Musically, there’s a touch of filter disco in the muffled, looping groove, spiced up with sexy, sashaying percussion. He even throws in a very useful Mouthacapellapolka for a quirky vocal tool.
Lee Jones wins gold medal for his seductive, sultry wiggler of a mix. Summoning a hip-shaking beat that the Minus lot would be proud of in their funkiest moments, a simple, late night 2-note b-line, and touches of trippy, dubbed-out FX, he creates a seriously cool heads down groove. A vintage remix.
