Chelonis R. Jones - Rehabilitation

The natural successor to Robert Owens’ throne returns with a refreshing new single here, with not to much as a beat in site. His future soul croonings are double-up with a lower harmony, and a slow-rising, rasping, gritty electro-techno bassline that gradually engulfs the track along with a buzzing synth sound. Then all of a sudden, it dies back down, allowing Jones’ voice to be reintroduced. It’s like some kind of angry beast rising from its slumber, breathing fire down on all and sundry, and then lying down again for a nap. Daring and different.

Marcus Fix’s re-rub carries on this defiance of convention, introducing the vocal from the start and allowing the track to build very slowly, focusing on the vocal before unleashing the full groove. On the way we get old skool organ melodies, trippy delays on Jones’ voice – and finally at the 3 minute mark, the full, chugging, galloping beat drops in. It’s a deadly, sexy, undulating groove, peppered with techy stabs – and a whole lot of fun.

Dachshund complete the package with a percussion heavy excursion, driven by swinging synth stabs and swirling pulses of bass. Jones’ voice is pitched right down to a seductive croon, and the whole thing bubbles along very nicely. A great package.
