In recent years it's become quite a daunting task for artists to build hype around their forthcoming albums and singles. That is, unless your name happens to be Gui Boratto; and unless you happen to be playing follow-up to Chromophobia; quite possibly one of the most memorable albums to be released during recent years. Gui's forthcoming album, Take My Breath Away, has attracted a swarm of press coverage already, and the first single (Atomic Soda EP) serves as a wholesome appetizer for the scores of hungry techno fiends awaiting the day the album hits the shelves.
The title track, Atomic Soda, doesn't unveil too many surprises. It's typical of what we've come to expect from Mr. Boratto over the last couple of years. The chunky kick drum is engulfed by a growling analog bassline, while simple one-note synth lines hum along, going back and forth with one another; creating a warm, yet melencholic vibe. You'd expect to hear Gui begin one of his imfamous live sets with a tune like this, and I wouldn't be shocked if it's indeed the very tune he is opening his sets with while doing his album tour.
Gui gallivants to the other side of the spectrum with Ballroom. The proverbial energy knob is twisted 4 or 5 notches in the upward direction, and the autopilot is set with dead-aim, straight at peak-hour dancefloors. Ballroom inherits it's energy from a monster bassline, while shuffling percussion and steady stabs build tension and pressure. The steam is slowly released during a monster breakdown, which takes Ballroom to the next level, making it a sure-shot hit in any club, at any time.
Both Ballroom and Atomic Soda have already found comfortable homes atop the sales charts - but the best is yet to come, folks. Take My Breath Away will easily be one of the year's biggest albums, and Atomic Soda is quite literally just a teaser.
