To review this tune, I’m going to tell a story.
Sometimes I like to go running. When I do, I normally whack some jump up slammer onto my iPod - big, bashy beats, lots of bass and savage drum kicks. Following the initial surge of energy and euphoria, I always end up tired, breathless, often with a stitch, unsatisfied and a bit disappointed.
What happened today when I, rather apprehensively, put Calibre’s ‘Two Drop’ on, was very different - kicking off with a steady drum beat and chilled out, gentle whistling atmospherics, I started my run, slower than usual, expecting to lose interest and end up walking soon. But no...as the tune progressed, with more melodic liquid rolling vibes and the steady pulse of the drum beat, so my pace was strong and steady. Rhythmic and reliable - I liked it.
So I flipped over, to Understand and, again, was pleasantly surprised. Fresh beats, clean sounds, airy and inspiring. Without thinking, I changed my usual route and explored a different area of the city. The echoes and chirping jungle sound bites throughout capture the imagination and set me thinking, pacing and experimenting, along with the rolling percussion which holds the whole track together and gently pushes the tune along.
When it finished, I put it on repeat. Inspiring, more enduring, steadier and more reliable than my usual selection of tunes, this 12” from Calibre is a cut above the rest. Definitely worth a listen.
