Various Artists mixed by Prins Thomas - Live at Robert Johnson vol. 2

Norwegian nu disco king (or is that prince?) Prins Thomas is the next in infamous, intimate German club's Robert Johnson’s mix series – a choice that will no doubt excite fans of the genre, hungry for a new official mix CD from one of the sceneleaders.
 
It’s business as usual at first – deep and fluffy-edged nu disco chugging in his usual vein, kicking off with the lovely guitar-flecked Idjut Boys version of Telemusic’s Funky Bass. The Balearic tinge on tracks like Trans Am’s First Words don’t really make you think of a dark 200-capacity club in Germany, but as the beats chunk up a little, you can see those bodies grooving in the smoke and lights. The vibe gets a little more hypnotic as Isol8’s remix of Frankie Vallentine’s Zumbi lays on big tribal drums and subtle acid bleepage, but we’re soon back to classy melodics with Thomas’ gorgeous remix of James Yuill’s This Sweet Love and the graceful violins of Dogs Of War’s Le Stress.
 
House and techno flavours seep into the mix slowly, Argy & The Mole and Villalobos pitching in with groovy bits, but with the focus always eventually coming back to disco – Martin Circus’ infectious Disco Circus making you yearn for summer festival fun. The kicks become harder and more regimented, and the electronic feel is upped – but before long we drop back to a languid tempo, all lazy, hazy beach-focused lushness. A sublime finale brings the pace back up but keeps the intensity lower, via lovely cuts like the classic, twinkling melody of Closer Musik’s Maria. Although the structure pushes and pulls you in different directions – not always quite how you want it to – this is a pretty decent mix that will get you chugging nicely on a summer day.
