Marc Romboy vs Tyree Cooper - Lost

Marc Romboy teams up with vocalist Tyree Cooper for this acid bruiser on Ovum. There’s little to it – just a reverberating, restrained acid b-line, simple percussion, and a rather clichéd vocal from Cooper (rhyming “dance” with “trance” and “groove” with “move” is some pretty weak shit), with a dubby, high-pitched acid motif to top it off later on. There’s no real sense of progression in the track and the groove isn’t strong enough to carry the track on its own – and overall the whole thing feels like a bit of a cop-out. Mazi & David Duriez make things slightly more interesting – pinning the track down and giving it a deep house spraying, with a lazy, deep b-line bubbling under dubby chords, haunting pads, and the high acid lick prevailing throughout. Nothing inspirational, but a nice enough groover that will have its fans.
The Dub is the one to go for though – with a backbone of thudding kicks and minimal hi-hats and shakers allowing a far more rampant, fierce, electro techno lead line with a more energetic melody than that of the original to take centre stage. The vocal is looped up to a succinct and effective snippet, and the track builds to a boshing cymbal driven crescendo. A useful track – but the content doesn’t quite justify a run time of 9+ minutes.
