Turbo Records is going from strength to strength. Having usurped the ‘cool crown’ from Ed Banger, the pressure is on to continue releasing quality dance music and not succumb to the complacency of stale formulas. They have, without a doubt, succeeded, and Omnidance is a beautifully constructed tribute to that success.
I bet Von Party, Turbo label boss, was tempted to cram the compilation with 20 or so of Turbo’s most triumphant offerings, just to rub it in the face of any rival labels that Turbo really are running the show. Instead the compilation is so well crafted that just a glance over the track list has you convinced that Montreal is cooler than London, Paris and Berlin put together. They have the big names and big tracks – ZZT’s The Worm kills with huge rolling bass drops; D.I.M.’s first single ‘Sysiphos’ has his trademark distorted sound that makes SebastiAn look like a little girl; and Popof and Mike Mind offer pulsing tech-house beats at their best.
But the beauty in this compilation is not the ‘bangers’; it is the vast musical range that Turbo can offer. Even without considering exclusive Jesper Dahlback edits and unreleased tracks, the versatility of the CD is mind-boggling. Jori Hulkonen’s edit of Chromeo’s Bonafide Lovin is beautifully sensual and sits perfectly next to the dark techno of Mr. James Barth. Even Boys Noize gets a shot at showing his range of skills with the uncharacteristically simple, mid-mix track, Gezahlt An entire book could be written on the merits of this collection, but instead the music should talk for itself.
As the name suggests, Omnidance covers vast genres and styles of dance music. The selection of artists and tracks make these two CDs almost timeless. Proxy and Tiga are for today, Brodinski and Dahlback are forever.
