Kuduro-alchemists Buraka Som Sistema came to global fame from their native Portugal before they’d even officially released anything, buzzing off big internet hype and their legendary, raucous live performance. Their about to make another assault on London this weekend, and we thought we’d get them to show us round their hometown of Lisbon to increase cross-cultural relations. Bem-vindo!
Where’s the best place to eat?
Argentinian - Buenos Aires Cafe downtown on Calçada do Duque.
We've also just discovered a bunch of really great seafood restaurants in Belém - on the lane in front of the river. Lisbon is known for its incredible fresh fish and this area is the place to go get it.
What’s the best club in town?
That's got to be Lux in Santa Apolonia. We think it's the best club in Lisbon, and maybe even the world! We were doing a monthly night there up until recently (we're to busy touring and in the studio now!), and we had some great guests - Sinden and Diplo came to play and smashed it! There's always a queue around the block.
Should we worry about dresscodes etc when clubbing there?
People in Lisbon dress comfortable for going out clubbing - it's really hot and if you're going to dance you're going to sweat! You get mostly jeans and cool t-shirts and good trainers.
Where’s the best place to go and chill out?
I really love to go and have a drink on the terrace at Barrio Alto hotel. You get a great view of the river and downtown
Where’s the best place to people watch?
The beach! This time of year the beach is the place to go and see all the beautiful girls and boys. Guincho beach is less than half an hour from the city centre by train.
Is getting around easy? Good transport etc?
It's fairly easy to get around Lisbon. For public transport, one trip costs 80 centimes (not even one euro!) on a rechargable card
What are the people like there / their attitudes / lifestyle?
People in Lisbon are totally cool, friendly and laid back. People don't make a big fuss, they just like to hangout and eat good food and listen to music.
What should you never say to a local?
Don't ever mistake Portugal for Spain! If you're in Lisbon, make sure you know what country you're in.
Where’s a good place to buy records?
Superfly in Barrio Alto
What about other shopping? Where’s good to go?
Barrio Alto is like Soho in terms of selection of cool music shops clothes, t-shirts, bars etc. There are also some really amazing new up and coming Portugese designers with shops there.
What other cultural highlights would you recommend in the city?
The Oriental museum opened last year and is really interesting and there's also the Berardo Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art – it’s also a good place to lose yourself for a few hours.
Any other tips we should know for getting the best out of the city?
Rent a car and drive to Sentra. It's a rolling Moorish countryside full of greenery and beautiful old villages. Eat local cuisine and drink wine! We think it's just as lovely as taking a drive through the south of France!
Buraka Som Sistema play at Deadly People this Saturday at the Papermill, Shoreditch with The Virgins (live), Herve and Midnight Juggernauts.
