Interview with the first lady of Cocoon, Cassy

For the second time in 2012, London this week welcomes the monstrosity that is Cocoon to town. Under the guise of the Cocoon Heroes worldwide tour, Cocoon Heroes ‘Into the Magic’ will showcase some of the hottest talents in electronic music of the moment. Due to take place on Saturday 1st December 2012 at the Great Suffolk Street Warehouse, Sven Vath will be at hand to handsomely steer the Cocoon mothership through 10 hours of unparalleled hedonism and debauchery. Overcoming the initial setback of having to relocate from the now redundant London Pleasure Gardens, Cocoon have elected to take over the Great Suffolk Street Warehouse with all of the thrills and frills expected of the Cocoon production team.

Neither the enterprising magnate that is Cocoon, nor label and company founder Sven Vath require much in the way of introduction. Having started out in the early 80’s Sven has firmly established himself as a worldwide phenomenon on the electronic music scene, not least for remaining firmly footed at the forefront of the scene himself but equally through his ability to champion and breed fresh talents. With an unrelenting thirst for partying Sven brings his show to London this Saturday with some of these aforementioned protégés who have developed themselves a considerable following and reputation.

One such understudy of “Papa Sven’s” is Cassy (Catherine Britton), a DJ and producer held in the highest esteem by fans the world over. With releases on Ostgut Ton, Dessous and Perlon to name a few, her own record label “Cassy” and the moniker of “Cocoon’s leading lady”, Cassy consistently fails to disappoint. Her deep soulful DJ sets infused with funk not always following the path of least resistance by playing to the crowd but often taking the crowd with them down whichever path she sees fit. Her energy and enthusiasm behind the decks matching that of the most wide-eyed and bushy tailed clubber. Cassy will be playing back to back at Cocoon Heroes this week with none other than Detroit techno legend Carl Craig. Currently on tour in the States, Cassy took some time out to chat with DT as a prelude to Cocoon Heroes ‘Into the Magic’ London.

DT: Hi Cassy, thanks for taking time out from your hectic schedule, I know you’ve just played all night long back to back with Danny Howells for his birthday in Miami! You have a photo up on your websites of you walking through an American suburb. Can you tell us a little about the photo? What was the inspiration behind it?

Cassy: It’s a new press pic, that's the inspiration… a different location. Harlem… a place I love… simple inspiration really!

DT: Okie dokie… and how about Cassy, your name is Catherine, is Cassy a nickname from childhood? How did it arise?

Cassy: A DJ friend or producer friend thought it was a good idea to use it as a DJ name. Since  German speaking folk mostly can't pronounce the 'th' it ends up being ‘s’ and then Catherine or Cathy ends up being Casserine or Cassy…

DT: Yeah, Casserine doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Cassy. Good choice…You've been travelling all over the world of late, currently on a US tour, this will be the second time that you're in the UK for Cocoon Heroes this year, of course you played the opening and closing parties at Cocoon, plus Panorama Bar.... what has been your highlight party for 2012 so far?

Cassy: There were many highlight parties, especially this year. I think my favourite was Dimensions Festival in Croatia…
--pagebreak--
DT: Focussing on the present, what is the most crucial ingredient to the Cocoon Heroes events in your opinion?

Cassy: All the people that work on them and put all their heart into it.

DT: You'll be playing back to back with Carl Craig next week. Playing back to back being something you do a fair bit of, what is it about this that you enjoy most?

Cassy: I enjoy playing back to back, it's a way of getting to know someone musically.

DT: I can safely say that your fan base, whilst appreciating your releases, really really love seeing Cassy in the booth. You've got a reputation worldwide for being pretty damn good at getting a crowd going and laying down consecutive perfect beats. What is about DJing that you love so much?

Cassy: Exactly that. Creating a vibe and drive and making people dance and enjoy the moment and make the music be the centre of it all...

DT: And what for you is the single most essential element to a good set/party?

Cassy: Good set - a good sound system. Good party - the 'right' people.

DT: What's your work ethic when it comes to record shopping/productions etc, are you pretty full on and persistent, do you prefer to let things take a natural course and have a pretty chilled outlook?

Cassy: Don't know really… I guess I do it my way...

DT: Ok…your background and upbringing is laced with music and performance, can you tell us if/how that has had an impact on your choice of career?

Cassy: Everything had an impact on the choice of my career. I am someone who cherishes every experience good or bad… I try to make the most of everything.

DT: You got into electronic music initially as a vocalist on "Music takes me higher" on Sabotage records, following which you worked with the likes of Dave The Hustler, Luciano and Mathew Jonson. How did these opportunities come about? Was it a case of being in the right place at the right time?

Cassy: Hanging out with people who I thought were interesting to meet and hang out with!

DT: You do, I believe, have a debut album in the pipeline....can you give us any details?!

Cassy: No not anymore… I will be doing something different…

DT: We will keep our eyes peeled. Finally can you describe yourself in three words?
Cassy: Pain in the arse… four words…

Catch Cassy at the Great Suffolk Street Warehouse this Saturday (1/12/12) for Cocoon Heroes ‘Into the Magic’ London, playing back to back with Carl Craig. Other headline acts for the night include Sven Vath, Mathias Kaden, Onur Ozer!
