Marcus Schossow

God those Swedes never quit do they? You’ve just finished digesting the impressive body of work that one of them serves up when along comes another to make you love the Nordic country even more. 22 year old Marcus Schossow is spearheading the new wave of “trance” artists (we use the quotation marks to denote someone who is big in the trance scene but would be callous to simply be labeled a trance artist), who fuses the meatiest elements of electro, techno, minimal and progressive house to the emotional backbone of trance music to devastating effect. Van Buuren’s signed him to Armada, van Doorn’s got him to remix his monstrous Apple and vans aside he’s also found fans in Steve Angelo and Pete Tong.

He’s churning out some absolutely sensational gear at the moment and is tipped for the very top. So remember, trance or otherwise, this is someone you need to check out. Go to the player at the bottom of this article, stick on his remix of Apple loud and tell us you aren’t impressed or haven’t had an involuntary bowel movement.

How did you get into dance music in the first place then?

It was back in 1998, my cousin was DJing in Miami as a deep house DJ and he sent me some cool mix CDs with some other stuff. After that I started to get deeper into it and got hooked into the 1999 sounding trance and well, since then I've been digging deeper and deeper in the record boxes. I guess we all go deeper and deeper music-wise the
older we get :)

When did you start producing, and how long was it before you started making tracks that you were really happy with?

Well, the first track I was really happy about was my release on the old now-defunct label 020 Records, which somehow suddenly disappeared when all the artists started asking for their money ha ha ha ha! Oh well... the good old vinyl days! The track was called Progresia - Stockholm and I was 16 when I made it.

What have been your personal favourite productions so far?

Hmmm hard to say, but I'm really happy about Chase My Rabbit and Deconheartstruction - it's track that will never be old...it's timeless and with a huge blend of wide range genres.

Where does your name come from?

Well, I was born with it!? But the 'Marcus' name comes from a famous bass player that my dad used to like. The 'Schossow' is my family name and it has its roots in the old German Pommern region which today is called Northen Pommern. I'm a huge mix, I've got Danish passport, born in Sweden, living in Slovakia :)

Who would you most like to work with?

Send me a wasted Trentemøller, a James Holden with a bag of weed and a living Mozart to my studio, no worries, I’ll cover the flight expenses!

What have you got in store for 2008?

Loads! I've got a few new remixes coming out now on Sander Van Doorn's Apple and I'm also doing a cheeky more deep techno-ish remix on Tiesto's Black Hole label with my fellow partner in crime Thomas Sagstad! There will also be a couple of new Schossow singles when the winter starts to knock on the door :)

What can we expect from one of your DJ sets?

It's a wide range of genres that are mixed into one genre, some techno, some tech house, some progressive house and a few big room trancers in the end :) It’s all about the flow, fuck the genres!

If you weren't a DJ/producer, what would you be?

I would be a writing philosopher and a home based chef since I'm always stressed when I make food! I'm a man with a lot of thoughts going on in my head, I guess the music is my therapy to process these thoughts.

Which other producers and DJs do you really rate?

Danny Howells is my hero! I was playing at DanceValley and there was some random strange hat-wearing dude coming up to my booth and asking where his records were and I answered "Who are you? I don't have your fuckin' records!!"... it turned out to be Danny Howells hahahahahah, nice one! I didn't know what he looked like so I was quite red in the face when I figured out! Anyway, I told him sorry and we ended up hugging!  His Essential Mix from 2007 is one of the best sets I've ever heard and I will never ever get tired of it!

Oxford degree-having, clever-rapping and acting MC flying the flag for British new blood, Rizwan's future is very bright indeed.

Butch

First there was DJ Quicksilver, Erol Alkan, then Onur Özer, and now Munich-based Butch has well and truly arrived to continue this short lineage of Turkish-blooded dance music producers. Deep melodic tech house is the order of the day.

Drop The Lime

We like blatant rule-disregarders here. New York’s Luca Venezia is one such unruly cat, and although he’s been banging out schizoid tracks since '03, it’s the last 2 years that have seen him become a serious force to be reckoned with.

Phonat

Without a doubt one of the most exciting producers about right now, using electro as his departure point and giving it a hefty dose of innovation.
