Everyone in techno from Villalobos to Beyer to Hawtin to Magda to Carola to Mills to Garnier has championed Glimpse's work over the years. Bridging any gaps between lush, interesting deep house and soulful, smooth techno, He is one of those producers who has arrived at people's attentions through sheer consistency rather than in a flurry of hype. Of late they've been bothering labels like Matt Tolfrey's frequently inspiring Leftroom, and Four:Twenty Recordings, after carving a name for themselves with their own Glimpse Recordings label.
All those techno bods can't be wrong, can they?
How and when were you first infected by dance music?
I was in bands from a very young age mainly playing blues and Jazz. I didn’t realise that I could express these two genres within techno music until I was 15 when I started DJing. This lead on to my first release in 1998. Since then I set up Glimpse Recodings with Kompakt.
When did you start producing, and how long was it before you started making tracks that you were really happy with?
I started producing when I was 17 but obviously the first few years were spent finding my feet and discovering techniques, buying equipment etc. The first records I was really happy with were probably the early Glimpse releases around 2002 on the Black Collectio'. They were really innocent and honest and very simple ’cos I didn’t have much kit in the studio.
What have been your personal favourite productions so far?
I’m not really sure. I find it hard to be judgemental about my own work. I was really happy with the last Glimpse release 5 Easy Pieces. I”m also writing some jazz at the moment which I’m really enjoying. This should be released on Glimpse next year.
Where does your name come from?
It’s just a word that I like the sound of. It also works for me musically. I like the idea of showing your audience a glimpse of something…an emotion, image or thought. A lot of my tracks are written about actual events so in a way they are a glimpse of something.
Who would you most like to work with?
I think I would like to produce an album for someone like Amy Winehouse to be honest...I think she has an amazing voice that I would love to work with. She is a really exciting artist and I’m sure she would be up for trying new things musically.
What have you got in store for 2008?
This year I’m hoping to complete the Bird Series on Glimpse. I’m also doing a lot of remixing for various lables and have got some more stuff coming out with Four:Twenty who I’m really enjoying working with at the moment. I will also be doing lots more touring in Japan and Australia and have my first USA/Cannada tour planned for September which is something I’m looking forward to ’cos I have never played in North America before.
What can we expect from one of your DJ sets?
I don’t DJ, I only play live. It really depends where I’m playing.. Sometime I play very techno stuff, somtimes more house or ambient…depends on the crowds.. I always try to show the broad range of music I make and am inspired by in my sets. I like to have lots of colour and references, always bringing something new to show.
If you weren’t a DJ/producer, what would you be?
My degree is in Sculpture. So I would probly have a culpture studio somewhere..ha ha ha…I prefer to do this though’
Which other producers and DJs do you really rate?
I’m really into what Jay Shepard and Tom Demac are doing right now. They have some great releases forthcoming this year. I’m also listening to a lot of Kelley Pollar as well and Jimmy Edgars new album is a BOMB!
