Take a pinch of Annie, a sprinkle of Italo disco, a smattering of dirty electro grubbiness, and stuff it all down the throat of a classically-trained songstress and what have you got? Little Boots. Doing the world of British female singer-songwriters a great service after the likes Kate Nash did just the opposite, this feisty young thing also DJs (Annie Mac picked her to play at Creamfields last weekend), remixes and produces, and is obsessed with Moog synthesisers. Top girl in our opinion!
How and when were you first infected by dance music?
Woah sounds like a disease... well I was first exposed to dance music going out in Blackpool as a teenager to clubs like The Rhythm Dome and Heaven & Hell. I think the playlist probably hasn't changed to this day... but since starting to DJ and remix I have got a lot more involved in dance music and understand the relevance of it a lot more. It’s been a good learning curve.
When did you start producing, and how long was it before you started making tracks that you were really happy with?
I don't really produce that much, I keep it very basic - I just do demos from home that are usually piano, drum machine and perhaps a synth line or two. Then I like to go into the studio and work with a producer on the track.
What have been your personal favourite productions so far?
Probably the track Stuck On Repeat which was produced by Joe Goddard from Hot Chip. I'm also personally quite proud of my remix of a song by Leon Jean Marie called Bring It On, because it was the first remix I've done and was very trial and error but everyone was really pleased with the finished result.
Where does your name come from?
My name is taken from a roman emperor called Caligula which is Latin for “little boots”. He was crazy and turned the palace into a brothel and made his horse a member of the roman consul, weird stuff like that, but the name seems to suit me quite well...
Who would you most like to work with?
I'm lucky to be working with a lot of people I really admire, but I'd actually really love to work with Kleerup who did the big Robyn track With Every Heartbeat - I love how his productions always sound really epic and quite dancefloor-friendly, but there's always a kind of melancholy and sadness about them which is really touching.
What have you got in store for 2008?
I'm just putting the finishing touches to my album which will hopefully be released early next year, and rehearsing hard with my band for live shows which start in September - I'm really excited!
What can we expect from one of your DJ sets?
I usually play quite a bit of old Italo disco, mixed with some newer disco and past and present pop, then often I play harder electro party type stuff later on.
If you weren’t a singer/songwriter/DJ/producer, what would you be?
Maybe I'd be a gardener…I'm pretty into gardening.
Which other producers and DJs do you really rate?
I really like Kleerup like I mentioned, a band called Heartbreak are also great producers, and I love alexander robotnick who has just done a remix for me. They're not strictly DJs but I love the Cosmic Disco podcasts and mixes, and the DJs at nights like cocadisco and disco bloodbath in Dalston are always good. I also love my friends from Fluokids' DJ sets and parties.
