First there was DJ Quicksilver, Erol Alkan, then Onur Özer, and now Munich-based Butch has well and truly arrived to continue this short lineage of Turkish-blooded dance music producers. Well he’s German-Turkish to be precise, but it’s still of note. He started off his journey in dance music as a teenage b-boy, taking trains to Frankfurt to graffiti and breakdance with mates. He eventually came a cropper, breaking both his arms after falling off a train – but it was this unforeseen injury that inadvertently led on to him trying DJing. Taking a break from dancing, he bought some turntables, and just a few years later came 6th in the German DMC DJ Championship. Thereafter, he found electronic music thanks to his older brother, and was soon spending many a wild night in Frankfurt’s legendary Dorian Gray club.
Bülent “Butch” Gürler was taken under the wing of German electronic music bastion Great Stuff Recordings in 2007, and the result of his ongoing collaboration with the label and its offshoots and 3 years of dedicated studio work has produced the stunning debut album Papillon. It fuses deep, melodic house with swinging minimal grooves, dashes of acid, sorrowful violins and jazzy organs to make for captivating, classy listen that sounds as good at home as it does on the dancefloor. More accomplished than his various 12”s, it deserves your full attention – and if he keeps on this way, he could soon become one of the scene’s hottest names.OK, so he doesn’t say much – but who cares when his tunes are this good…
